BASIC NAUTICAL INFORMATION

Owners of vessels (boats with motors of 15 HP and over, jet-skis) are obliged to register their vessels at the Pula Harbour Master's Office (Riva 18, tel. 22 20 37, fax 276 46).

The registration fee that is charged upon arrival is valid for one year. This fee depends on the length of vessel. In addition to this, guests are also bound to pay the third party insurance premium. This insurance can be paid before leaving for Croatia. The same applies to owners of all watercraft including jet-skis.

All persons maneuvering motor boats, including watercraft and jet-skis must have relevant sailing permits.

Persons wishing to engage in underwater activities should procure a diving permit at the Harbour Master's Office or at one of the diving clubs listed under DIVING.

In case you have not made advance arrangements for your berth, contact ADRIA TOURIST SERVICE in Medulin, Brajdine 95, tel. 57 69 19 that offers private berths in Medulin port. Summer working hours: 8 a.m. -10 p.m., winter working hours:

8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

In Medulin there is also a marina on shore (boat places on land) VINMARIN,

tel. 57 61 75,57 61 69 (marked on the map of the appendix), where boats and trailers may be left for safe-keeping throughout the year.

Persons wishing to take the exam for obtaining a boat maneuvering permit should contact the Pula Harbour Master's Office at the abovementioned telephone number.

Note: It is allowed to skim at the distance of 300 metres from the beach. It is allowed to drive water-scooters along the marked water-ways, only. In Medulin' s bay this water-way is between the island of Ceja and the camp site Medulin and it is marked by buoys.

To reach the water-way you have to drive at the lowest speed. It is compulsory to have a licence or a driving permit for water-scooters. The disregard of the above mentioned rules is punished with a fine up to 5.000 KN.

In area Medulin- Pula there are three ACI Marinas for greater vessels and yachts: in Medulin , in nearby ( 2 km) Pomer , in Pješčana Uvala and in Port of Pola.

Marinas give services of all of year accommodation , have a crane, and also all another collateral equipment and services.

Shops specialized for navigation and sport fishing are located in Pula.

Petrol station for boats are in Port of Pola and Marina Veruda by Pješčana Uvala.

For litle vessels till max. 6-7 m length we can reserve for you mooring in Medulin port.

WINDS :

       The Bura (bora) and the Jugo-siroco (jugo-scirocco) are the main winds on the Adriatic. They prevail in the winter period from September to May. The prevailing wind in the summer is the Maestral.

            Bora is a cold and dry north-easterly wind. It blows in squalls from the continent towards the open sea and brings bright weather.

            Jugo is a warm, humid east-southeast wind, accompanied by heavy clouds and rain. It is not a sudden wind like the bora but takes 36-38 hours to develop.

             Maestral is a local wind which blows from the sea, mostly in the summer. It usually starts between 10 and 11 in the morning and reaches its greatest strength between 2 and 3 in the afternoon to die down at sunset. It brings good weather. It is usually accompanied by white clouds.

Other winds:
Burin, a north-easterly, blows in the summer from the mainland.
Tramontana and easterly Levante are another milder types of Bora.

Boats from 5 hp - 50 hp

- Daily price ranges from EUR 50 to EUR 77 depending on the power.

- Petrol is not included in the price.

- Discount is given for rent three or more days ( 25%).

- Daily rents only from the desk, prior to arrival reservations possible

for weekly rentals.
- Licence needed ( see above)

Ships and speed-boats from 90 hp to 205 hp

- Only weekly rents.

- Price ranges from EUR 950 to EUR 1400 per week, depending on hp. Deposit 50 % from the rent price at the contracting and the rest of 50 % 6 weeks before taking up.

COURSE FOR COASTAL NAVIGATION

The course is held by harbour captain ( in Pula) and consists of the theoretic as well as of a practical part. It normally lasts for 7 days but can be quickened on demand.

The test is taken in front of an examining body and the licence thereafter given is internationally acknowledged as the motorboat or sailingboat coastal navigation licence for boats

to 12 m of lenght, without restriction on engine strenght .

Valid only for navigation up to 20 sea miles from the coast.

Price: About   250 EUR.

PERMISSION FOR FISHING

   For Sport - fishing you would have to have a permit, which can be obtained in the ADRIA TOURIST SERVICE in Medulun, Brajdine 95 at the following cost :

9 EUR for one day only,
20 EUR for three da ,
40 EUR for one week
and 93 EUR   for one month.

Permission is valid only for one person ( by name)   and
underwater gun is included without use of oxygen tanks.
